What have i learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Camera Work:

For filming the media product, we used the FujiFilm S9600 Bridge Camera. It enabled us with possible focus pulls, and good optical zoom.
Also files to transfer onto final cut pro was no hassle.

Editing:
In the editing I used a few different programs for the opening sequence, and each played a different part in the sequence. All the programs came from Final Cut Studio, which helped out a lot and had relevant software to produce a low budget opening sequence.

I also used photoshop to produce two titles in the opening sequence. Which also gave a good effect.

Titles:
For the production of titles, I was able to produce a title using Motion, and combined the title with a soundtrack i produced on GarageBand, for a professional feel to the title sequence. From using Motion i learnt how to produce video loops, and how to create an animated short sequence.

Making music:

The first part of the main opening sequence is the soundtrack, produced and edited by Marius Maldem. He first produced the the rapping in the recording studio with a backing track playing, it was then editing using Fruity Loops Studio, which enabled him to edit every part of the track, being able to add sequencers, and various other effects. With his permission, we were able to use this as the main part of our opening sequence. I was also able to synchronize different parts of the sequence to relevant parts in the soundtrack to give an interesting effect.

How did you attract/address your audience?

In the movie we used quite relevant sounds and soundtracks to attract relevant audiences who like similar hip-hop and rap style music.
Typical and popular artists would be "Dizzee Rascal" and also "The Game"

Also the events during the movie may involve similar problems and situations to people watching the movie, as they too, may be involved in this style of life, but hopefully without the same level of violence. The main way that we attracted our audience is through word of mouth, and that through a public spreading of the media product, it wouldn't cost anything for advertising, if we had to, and that it would also be popular amongst the particular audience.

4:

Suitable Audience for the media product.

The suitable age Certificate for "My Turf" would be a 15, due to the strong language and violence. Relevant and similar films to this media project that audiences may have seen before, is the movie "Kidulthood" and its sequel "Adulthood"

as they both show a crime-like theme throughout the
films involving the police and other authoritative figures.

Our main aim, is the younger audience of 15 - 18 years of age, and from there on the word of mouth may also gather older audiences of 19+, which would benefit the film even more.

DISASTER!!

When coming to the final stages of the editing, a technical error came about where most or all of the video files for the project have been deleted, so therefore we could do a little amount of work with the actual final cut. I then discovered that the files them self can be recovered from the trash bin on the desktop, therefore that saved us a lot of trouble, and enabled us to finish off the rest of the editing.

feedback and critics

After finishing our first edit draft for My Turf, it was showed to other groups and classes for feedback be it positive or negative. These are some of the feeds we got:-

1 The end scenes let it down, (too drastical)

2 Syncing of sounds, action and bullets needed rendering

3 They liked the titles

4 Consistent titles e.g pills and text

5 Shakey camera (mirrors/wardrobe) ?

6 Music was good

7 Fine line between urban and gangster

8 laughter when Mike throws the ninja star

9 kidulthood rather than 'Boys n the hood'

10 Suit?

11 Liked the glow effect

12 Some people didn't get it

13 Syncing of gun shots

These feeds were made by other media studies students doing the same project so therefore their remarks are taken into consideration. After talking to Mike we have made some amendments. i will respond to the above feeds.

1 I was surprised to find out that some people thought the end scene let it down. The end scene for me was meant to be a climax to the tense atmosphere built from the start of the sequence.

2 We are currently working on fixing the sound effects of the bullets to synch with the action.

3 Good to hear positive remarks on the title. we tried making it different and creative.

5 The camera was abit shakey on the mirror shot but i didnt notice until i heard the comment.

6 music was a key part to potraay the rise in tension between each scene.

8 After looking at the feeds on the scene where Mike throws the shuriken at me, we decided to take that shot out and replaace it with a clack screen but leaving the sfx over the black screen to suggest the shuriken was thrown at me.

10 the idea of Mike wearing a suit is because his character is rich and powerful, dresses smart to hise his true nature as a cold bloogeg killer.

12 The storyline cant be understood just from watching the opening of a film. Crime thrillers do not reveal much about the narration at the start of the film so this opening sequence stays conventional to its genre.

13 we looked again at the first draft and took out the gun shots sfx then replaced it with another one created on garage band.

Editing

The editing for the opening sequence has nearly been completed. Using different programs I have been able to produce a good quality opening sequence using sounds from soundtrack pro, a soundtrack created using a recording studio and edited on Fruity Loops, animations from Motion to create an effective production company name. I also used Photoshop CS to create another production company logo "Seaview Pictures" accompanied by a sound from soundtrack pro. These were all then put together on Final Cut pro, which is an editing software, to produce a 2 minute opening sequence to a movie named "My Turf".

We first used Final Cut Pro to get all of out main opening sequence together, and that didnt take much time, as I first got the frames to match the storyboard, later modifications would then be made accordingly to sounds and constructive criticism, I then removed most of the sound from the actual shot in the frames itself, and the backing sound was replaced by a soundtrack created by Marius Maldem, and i also replaced the non and diegetic sounds with SFX used from SoundTrack Pro, which contains a plethora of different sounds.

During the editing i also wanted to apply my intended effect on mulitple frames, where the same subject was viewed from different angles but in a 1-3 second sequence of frames, this gave a distorted but great effect on the sequence, as i also managed to synchronize the frames with the beats of the soundtrack.

Sounds

Throughout the editing stage, i have come up with an array of different sounds to give the proper diegetic feel to the film opening sequence.

The program i will be using to produce most, or even all of the diegetic sounds for the opening sequence is called Soundtrack Pro, which is part of a movie production package for Apple Macintosh. The program has a pletherer of sounds and SFX which can be put together to make a whole soundtrack or even the smallest effect of a pindrop.

The sounds effects i will be using from this program will be :
Silenced Pistol
Alarm Clock
Door Shut
Door open
Throwing Knife
Water Run
Water Drop
Bullet Drop

These Sound effects would give the opening sequence a better and realistic feel as i will also edit the offset of the sound, with the left and right balance, therefore, if viewed in surround sound, it would give a better effect as the sounds will be heard from where they appear on the screen, this technique is also used in mainstream production movies, to give the audience a "mind blowing" experience so to say.

Seaview pictures

As part of our sequence producttion we created and produced a logo for our first production and distrubution conpany (seaview pictures). examples of iconic film production companies logos are

  • Universal Pictures

  • 20th century fox

Universal Pictures and 20th century fox are amogst the biggest and long lasting production compainies from U.S and around the world.
They are the backbones behinnd movie succeses. They produce box office hollywood blockbusters around the year and have a high amount of turnover from big movie sales.
production and distrubution company logos are always the first to be seen at the start of a film sequence. Most production companies specialise in genres of films e.g

Lionsgate is famouse for distrubuting some horror productions like the (Saw) series, the recent (Day breakers)

Walt disney pictures specialises in cartoons and kids movies such as the succesfull (High school musical) it also works with Pixar to produce the best animated movies yearly like (Toy story), (WALL E) etc.

Seaview Pictures logo

Our primary production company name is Seaview Pictures. To create a logo for the name we thought it will be conventional to use an image of the sun setting behind a sea. the picture was copied from a google image search and added unto Adobe Photoshop. we used exposure tools on photoshop th change the colour id the original image making it look abit darker. then the name was added unto the image using the insert text tool.
This Logo will appear at the start of the opening sequence.

Music

For this project my initial idea was to make a basic tune from the combination of synths and piano to heighten tension from start and end of the sequence. But after coming up with the plot of the movie and looking at other similar genres i thought it will conventional to use a hip-hop song for the sequence.

As we aren't allowed to use unauthorized or copyrighted work, i asked for help from a friend Marius Maldem. He had made a beat for his track using Fl studio. The rap is in Albanian and talks about street life. so i thought the idea of the music fits with the sequence.

Police Panic !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This morning i recieved a text message from my brother telling me our six-a-side football team had been suspended pending police investigation over a possesion of dangerous weapon in a public place. i dismissed the text thinking it was a joke but then my brother called me and told me i was wanted in the police station. (panic!) i woke up and went to the station with the 'toy gun' i carried last night to football after borrowing it from my friend for this media project. I explained to the police in charge of the case why i had it on me. Apparantly they recieved a call from one of the teams in wyvern school saying i was seen puting a gun in a bag whilst changing to play football. the police had sent 3 search teams to wyvern and stopped any suspects matching my description. They also went through CCTV cameras trying to track me down. (police panic). the police incharge was gratefull i showed up with the 'toy gun' to resolve the case. He also warned me about carrying anything that looks like a weapon in public places even if its for a media project.

Filming Schedule and Equipment

Due to the limitation of college cameras we have decided to use Mikes camera. It is a Fuji-film digital camera with 10.7 optical zoom capability it has got 9 megapixel.

As mentioned before the filming will take place in my house due to the fact that the location is suitable for the film settings and easily accessible to all cast and crew.
We're planning to start filming on Monday 15th February, which we plan to cover most, or possibly all of the filming, ready for editing the first week we come back, due to an early date in filming, this enables us time for view and rethinking better ideas, and to see if the filming was appropriate. We will also use proper filming equipment, involving tripods, studio lighting, and dolly's. This will ensure that we have the best lighting possible, as well as a smooth panning shot in some of our frames that require a pan shot.

This is a good example of a professional dolly, whereas we will be using a makeshift dolly, consisting of caster wheels, and a triangular wooden plate.
These are professional studio lights used in mainstream films which provide the best lighting conditions for filming, we will be using an industrial light used for digging sites.
Lighting will be essential to create a warm feeling in the film and also signifies a change of mood.

Costume Inspiration

The inspiration for the costume attire, mainly comes from previous gangster genre films. From the steriotypical hoody like costumes for black ghetto gangsters to smart blazed suits for a typical Asian gang.

'My Turf' will portray a distinctive difference between the both gangs, through their clothing, style of hair and jewelry. Costume will serve as an iconic representation of their identity.

Animatics

We used the storyboard to create a visual animatic of the opening sequence.
The animatics was a helpful tool in experimenting with non-diegetic and diegetic sounds. It gave us an idea for the timings of each shot in relation with the amount of time the sequence can last. Doing the animatics meant all the sounds and visual effects needed were sorted out for the real title sequence.

SHANK

This new upcoming movie called "SHANK" has very similar qualities to our media idea, as in the time to come of 2015, it shows that the whole of britain is over run by gangs, and through being affiliated with a gang, prooves to provide shelter and safety, but also danger involving other gangs.
This is very much like our movie as there are 2 rival gangs, which always try to kill each other, and being on the offensive seems to be the best offence in gang culture. As the movie quotes "Kill, or be killed".

Props and costume

Weapons :

Shuriken

M16a4

text describing the image
Costume:

In the opening sequence, and throughout the whole of the story line, costume plays an important role to show which person belongs to each gang. We are trying to show the difference between the black ethnic background and their apparel, alongside the asian ethnic background and their apparel as well.

The Saints :
Their main symbol or "Tag" is the fleur de lys

This symbol shows that this gang is wealthy as it is commonly used on old victorian buildings, and wallpapers that appear in very wealthy environments.

Typical clothing of The Saints, this gang would normally wear casual clothes, consisting of hoodies and tracksuit bottoms, as this type of clothing best suits them.

Black Stars

This is their main emblem, as it represents the weaponry they most likely use, which is the shuriken, which is a small but lethal weapon, also describing the gang, as they are as clean cut as this emblem is.
Their attire consists of expensive designer labels, and smart outfits, sometimes with suits, and Fedora's.
